The Fisker Karma - Pure Driving Passion

Factory-Built Fisker Karma To Debut, Stir Passion, in Paris

Three years after its founding, Fisker is now ready to show off its first production vehicle.

The $89,000 Fisker Karma will debut at the Paris Motor Show, which opens to the public on Oct. 2. “We are very excited to be introducing the first factory-built Karma luxury plug-in hybrid in Paris, a city known for inspiring its own passions,” said Henrik Fisker, the company’s co-founder, CEO and executive design director.

In honor of the Paris show, Fisker released a set of new images of the luxury plug-in hybrid—shot with its “Pure Driving Passion” theme.

The Karma features a conventional turbocharged 2.0-liter gas-engine aided by two 150 kW motors. When combined, they produce 400 horsepower. The company claims that the Karma can sprint from 0 - 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. Fisker also says the 2011 Karma can travel 50 miles solely on electric power from the battery, after which the gas-engine extends the range to more than 250 miles. That could add up to fuel economy exceeding 100 miles per gallon.

In Paris, Fisker also promises to release details about company's global retail network, which the company is relying on to eventually sell 100,000 cars per year. Fisker said earlier this year that it had received 1,300 orders for the Karma. Regular production is scheduled for early 2011.

The Karma was unveiled as a concept in early 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show and originally had been slated for production in late 2009 and then mid-2010.

The carmaker has raised a lot of money, and has won the faith of the federal government—judging by the $528 million loan it was awarded by the Department of Energy earlier this year. The majority of that money will go towards developing and selling its second car—currently known only as Project NINA—which Fisker hopes to sell for less than $40,000.
