Fisker Karma Production Set for March

The first deliveries of the Fisker Karma luxury plug-in were originally scheduled for 2009, and then 2010, and have now slipped to early 2011. Yet, Russell Datz, a spokesman for Fisker Automotive, confirmed in an email to PluginCars.com that “regular production will start in March with deliveries expected to begin soon after.”

The company aims to build and sell about 15,000 Karmas in 2011.

The Fisker Karma is built in Finland, so if regular production begins in March, it will presumably take longer than one month for shipping and delivery—pushing deliveries to late spring, at the earliest. Along with the shift in dates, the price of the Fisker Karma has also changed over time. The price of the Karma, has mostly recently been set to $95,900 for EcoStandard; $103,900 for EcoSport; and $108,900 for EcoChic.

While plans are expected to somewhat shift with any start-up company, the road ahead is smooth and fast moving for the luxury plug-in sportscar company, according to Henrik Fisker, the company’s founder and visionary. He believes electric cars will follow the same adoption path as other once high-end electronics products. Speaking recently at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Fisker said:

Everyone's is buying a flat-screen TV and smartphone now and no one is going to go back to the old technology. Sure, an old TV may have just as good a picture as a flat-screen but that didn't stop them from taking off. It's the same with electric cars. If you want one, you will buy one. More people will see them and then everyone will want the latest technology.

Fisker explained that flat-screen TVs launched in 1997 with a price tag of nearly $20,000, but prices have now dropped below $500. Fisker expects the same price trend from electric-drive vehicles. He believes extended-range electric vehicles like the Fisker Karma will become the "core powertrain" in the automotive industry in the next five years or so.
