Everybody in the Water!

Summer's around the corner and the water is calling. If getting your crew and their gear to the beach is of critical importance when you're choosing your next car, here are our recommendations for the best surf cars.

A4 Allroad

Audi's Allroad, first introduced in the '90s, can legitimately lay claim to being the first true crossover. The aggressive Sportwagon, with all-wheel drive and high ground clearance, is the definition of elegant utility. Today's A4 Allroad maintains the original's tough functionality but is now loaded with the latest comfort and tech as well.

Audi's 4-cylinder 2.0 liter engine delivers 261 hp to its venerated Quattro full-time AWD drivetrain. Strap your boards up top and make your way to Trestles or Malibu for the morning glass. After your session, sink into the Allroad's standard leather heated seats and shake off that ocean chill as you head into the office.

Honda HR-V

The HR-V from Honda is the perfect, modern do-everything car. Much like how mom's old station wagon was pressed into duty hauling surfboards back in the day, the HR-V is a great daily commuter that transforms during the weekend. With its roof rack loaded and the back "magic seat" engaged, the HR-V has more than enough space for a day chasing the waves. With city and highway consumption just on either side of 30mpg, the HR-V can power you from Leo Carillo to Laguna for less than a post-surf lunch at In-N-Out.

Lexus NX

The NX from Lexus comes loaded with all of the style, reliability, and comfort that Lexus is known for. The compact SUV comes well equipped across its 9 trim levels. All iterations come equipped with a 2.0 liter inline 4 engine, with the top end of the range offering a hybrid engine. All models have around 54 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. Available ventilated seats will keep you cool during those late summer trips to Huntington Beach or Ventura.

The sporty, compact NX offers plenty of thrills before and after surf trips, with adaptive suspension, and variable drive modes to make the NX as aggressive as you want. The full complement of active and passive safety features are available for every trim level, making sure that you and the kids get home safely.

Porsche Macan

Porsche's compact SUV, the Macan is a perfect blend of sport and utility. The Macan employs 2 powerplants over its 4 trim levels. The Standard Macan uses a turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine, producing 248 hp, while the range-topping Macan Turbo boasts a twin-turbo V6 that outputs an eye-opening 434 hp.

All versions of the Macan use Porsche's 7-speed PDK transmission which offers both automatic and manual shifting, depending on your level of stoke. Outfitted with Porsche's Techquipment accessories, the Macan can capably handle your boards and anything else you need to half to your favorite surf spot. Inside, the Macan's interior cradles you in 18-way adjustable leather seats and an optional Burmester surround sound system.

Toyota Venza

The Venza from Toyota offers a new take on the crossover. Decidedly more akin to a sedan than an SUV, the Venza strikes a chord of elegant utility. The Venza is only offered as a hybrid, and it delivers a combined city/hwy consumption of around 40 MPG. The Venza only has 3 trim levels so the upgrades are all in the service of greater convenience.

All models include free Toyota Care scheduled maintenance and Roadside Assistance for 2 years. Similarly, all models included electronic on-demand AWD which can redirect power to the rear wheels when conditions require it. The Venza also offers the option of the Star Gaze® Panoramic sunroof. The sunroof uses electrochromic glass technology that allows drivers to change the sunroof from transparent to frosted in the event you've had enough sun for the day.

Atlas Cross Sport

After the success of Volkswagen's range-topping SUV, the Atlas, introduced the Atlas Cross Sport variant as an option for those seeking a sportier profile. The Crosssport loses the 3rd-row seats making the cargo area even more voluminous. The Cross Sport comes with a standard 235hp 4-cylinder or optional V6 engine with 275hp, either of which can be configured with front or all-wheel drive.

VW accessories dept provides plenty of options for carrying boards or kayaks with an entire that fits 5 adults easily. Volkswagen is also providing 2 years of scheduled maintenance, 3 years of roadside assistance, and 4 a year of warranty to insure thousands of worry-free trips to your favorite hidden surf spot.

Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru's versatile, affordable Crosstrek has become a ubiquitous vehicle for the outdoor adventure seeker. With standard all-wheel drive, great mileage, a rugged exterior, and plenty of cargo space, the Crosstrek is the surfer's best friend. For 2021 the Crosstrek has a new 2.5-liter iteration of Subaru's famous boxer engine, supplying 182 hp and highway mileage around 34 MPG.

The Crosstrek's large hatch opening and 60-40 folding rear seats allow 3 people and their gear out to El Porto. Regular beach-goers will also love the new Star Tex® water repellent upholstery Subaru offering 2021. The Crosstrek's 4 trim levels and 1 hybrid option make it easy to find the perfect one for your budget, with only the hybrid model breaching the 30k threshold. Once again the Crosstrek is an IIHS Top Saftey Pick® and received its top rating for front crash prevention.

Lexus UX

The UX from Lexus IS a compact crossover tailor-made for city driving. With its small footprint, aggressive handling, and peppy 4-cylinder engine, the UX will be a blast to rip down the PCH looking for that last parking spot along the shoulder at Topanga Canyon. The UX comes in 4 gas and 4 hybrid versions with combined MPG coming in at roughly 34 and 37 respectively.

Gas versions of the UX come with Lexus' new 10 speed Direct-Shift CVT to maintain a smooth ride across the powerband. Hybrid versions come with standard all-wheel drive. Inside, you can pile on the creature comforts with ventilated seats, a heads-up display, WiFi, and wireless phone charging.
