VW's performance unit emerged from its original, functional "people's car" era of the company with the earliest versions of the Golf GTI in the 1980's. But in 2002 Volkswagen began production of the Mk4 R32 for the German market. Due to unexpected popularity, Volkswagen decided to sell the car in the United States in 2004, now called the R32. Billed as the pinnacle of the Golf IV platform, the R32 included every performance, safety, and luxury feature Volkswagen had to offer. It was also fast and incredibly fun to drive. Thus a legend was born. These days, for those who feel the need for something that goes beyond the thrill of the standard GTI, the 2026 Golf R as it's now known, is still magnificent. As of 2025, the Golf R's turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is rated at 328 horsepower handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system features a rear differential that can actively distribute torque between the left and right rear wheels for improved handling. The Golf R outshines all its rivals in the segment with a 0-60 of 4.1 seconds. It's truly one of the best values for a high performance sports car in them market. Additionally, the Golf R is a low volume vehicle in the US, so their value holds up well over time.
Subaru's reputation as an all-purpose vehicle traces back to a company decision in the mid-nineties to offer AWD as standard on all vehicles. Long the choice of sensible east coasters and hippie ski bums out west, the Subaru brand oozes practicality and purpose. In 2025 Subaru created a sub-brand of vehicles that carry the Wilderness badge to further that promise. The Wilderness branded cars add true off road functionality that goes beyond their more refined counterparts. The Subaru Wilderness edition is available in 3 models, the Forester, the Outback and the Crosstrek. All feature raised suspensions with 9.2 inches of ground clearance, 17-inch matte black-finish alloy wheels and Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, dual-function X-MODE® with hill descent control and StarTex® water-repellent upholstery.
The Outback Wilderness includes all this and adds unique front and rear bumpers with integrated tow points and extended lower cladding, High-capacity fixed roof rails and a Harman Kardon® premium audio system. So whatever size and shape is best for you, the Wilderness brand takes you farther.
Hyundai's slow rise from a newbie Korean oddity 20 years ago to a brand capable of creating multiple compelling, well-designed vehicles of all types is fully realized in the form of the all electric Ioniq 5 N. And for those with dirty thoughts, the Ioniq 5 XRT adds genuine off-road performance. The Ioniq 5 N combines impressive EV acceleration with road manners that recall classic sports cars. Its dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system produces 601 horsepower and up to 641 horsepower with N Grin Boost engaged, enabling a swoon inducing 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds.
The Ioniq 5 N allows for minute driver customization via various drive modes that take the car from civilized city car to fire breathing track beast instantly.
One of the Ioniq 5 N's most distinctive new features is its ability to simulate driving an internal-combustion sports car. Simulated gear shifts, engine-like sounds, and steering-wheel paddle shifters create a familiar driving experience despite the electric, all-torque powertrain.
Other upgrades for 2026 include the addition fast DC charging at up to 238 kW and a new NACS charging port, providing native access to Tesla Superchargers.
The XRT Version of the Ioniq 5 adds a 35mm suspension lift, multi-terrain mode and lower-body black cladding to keep the scratches and chips to a minimum when you take the XRT into the sand and mud. The higher ground clearance and greater suspension travel also increase ride quality in daily driving. So pick your fighter and go have some fun.
The GV60 Magma is a new compact luxury electric SUV from Genesis with an impressive 641 horsepower on tap, ranking it among the most powerful EVs available. The Magma edition uses dual electric motors to produce all that horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Genesis estimates a 0-60 mph time of around 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 164 mph. Launch Control, Boost mode, customizable driving settings, and a Drift mode add to the fun. Its suspension and power distribution have been specially tuned, while Pirelli 275/35R-21 tires and upgraded brakes improve handling and stopping power.
Despite its performance, the GV60 Magma remains focused on refinement rather than extreme aggression. The cabin is quiet and comfortable during normal driving, while the chassis provides confidence and agility on winding roads. An 800-volt electrical architecture enables extremely fast charging, with Genesis stating a 10-to-80 percent DC fast-charge time of just 18 minutes.
But the Magma doesn't stop flowing with the GV60, a Magma supercar variant called the Magma GT is also threatening to erupt.
Positioned as the brand's ultra-performance halo vehicle, the upcoming Genesis Magma GT has a low-slung profile, dihedral doors like the Koniesegg Regera, and mid-mounted turbocharged V-8. The Magma GT is essentially the street version of the new Genesis Hypercar that it intends to race in the IMSA Endurance series. Stay tuned as the Magma GT nears release as it will be a legitimate competitor to the elite sports cars like the Porsche GT3 and the Corvette ZR-1.
Kia remade its design language over the last several years, creating a beautiful stable of cars of all shapes and sizes. In a land dominated by crossovers and SUVs, Kia's K5 is a stylish, tasteful sports sedan. The K5 GT, the performance-focused version adds 100 horsepower and ups the smile factor significantly. The K5 GT has a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter engine delivering power through an exclusive eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Sounds smoother than a BTS hook.
Beyond the engine upgrade, the K5 GT also sports larger brakes, a sprightly suspension tune, wider tires, and 19-inch wheels. Despite its performance focus, the GT returned an impressive 36 mpg in independent testing, exceeding its 33-mpg EPA rating.
Inside, the K5's sophisticated cabin features quality materials and upscale features such as ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. Generous rear-seat legroom and a roomy trunk round out the overall appeal of this imminently fun to drive family sedan.
Audi is now synonymous with luxury and performance, but that was only achieved after decades as a mainstream German car brand. But with the launch of the Quattro brand centered on an all wheel drive system, Audi began to focus on performance. The true launch of the legendary RS program was in 1994 with the first Avant RS2, their first sports wagon. It was the fastest and most powerful Audi production car ever built with a turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine and a top speed of 162 mph.
Those numbers seem quaint in the era of the modern Audi RS program.
The 2026 Audi RS6 Avant's core powertrain is a 621-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
A 48-volt hybrid system supports the V8, as if it needed it. In testing, the RS6 Avant reached 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. The Avant tames that power with four-wheel steering and a torque-vectoring rear differential, improving agility and stability.
Fuel economy is almost respectable for a car with its thirst, with EPA estimates of roughly 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Look, nobody's perfect.
The RS6 Avant isn't the only model in the Audi range to get the RS glow up. There are RS variants up and down the range depending on the size and shape in which you want to get freaky.
Since the inception of Lexus in the late 1980's plans existed for the high performance "F" line, named after the Fuji Speedway, a key test site for the brand's high performance vehicles. The first car from the performance shop was the IS F, an upgraded version of the IS 500. The 2008 IS F had an V8 outputting 415 HP, a 25% increase from their best selling IS model. The following year Lexus unveiled the fire breathing LF A, a coupe with over 500 horsepower and limited to 500 hand-built models. Today, Lexus continues the tradition of classic, understated performance with the F sport trim level available on all of their models of SUVs and cars. Also, a new all-electric LF-A concept vehicle has been announced that looks to advance the F line into a post-gasoline future with the perfect blend of blazing speed, refined luxury and a well-earned reputation for reliability.
Porsche has since its beginning been a pure sports car company, inextricably linked to the track since the earliest track-reach 911 RS models in the early 1970's. Porsche's spiritual successor to the RS became the GT3, introduced in 1999. The GT3 was proposed first as a driver's car with a focus on pure performance at the expense of creature comforts.
The 996 GT3 (1999-2005) established the formula with a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six derived from the 911 GT1 race car. Producing up to 381 hp, it combined adjustable suspension, racing-derived brakes, and lightweight construction.
The 997 GT3 (2006-2011) introduced Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as power rose to 435 HP from a 3.8-liter engine. Revised aerodynamic components-including the rear wing, front spoiler, and underbody-generated greater downforce, while Porsche Traction Control improved high-speed handling.
The 991.2 increased displacement to 4.0 liters and output to 500 hp, closely matching the GT3 Cup race car. Rear-wheel steering, improved aerodynamics, lightweight construction, and the newly added choice of PDK automatic or manual transmissions further expanded the GT3's stable of fans. Adding an automatic was a acknowledgement that customers wanted the performance of the GT3 with a little less work behind the wheel. /p>
In 2026, Porsche extended the concept to the GT3 S/C, the first GT3 convertible, combining the 510 hp, 4.0-liter engine with extensive weight-saving technology. Also new for 2026 is a special GT3 model created in honor of F.A. Porsche's 90th birthday. Limited to just 90 units, all in green paint, the 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche is sure to become one of the most coveted models in the storied history of the GT3.
Toyota's historic performance programs reflect a long-standing connection between motorsport and road-car development for the brand. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) established the company's performance identity through competition and engineering, developing race technology and performance components for Toyota vehicles. This philosophy later evolved into GAZOO Racing (GR), which Toyota presents as a broader motorsport and performance-car program.
GR was founded on the principle that racing provides the ultimate environment for testing people, technology, and vehicles. According to Toyota's philosophy, Motorsport challenges are used to develop engineering expertise and create "ever-better" road cars. Under the influence of legends like Akio Toyoda and Hiromu Naruse, GR grew from a racing-focused organization into a major road-car performance brand. GR's production philosophy emphasizes transferring race technology directly to street vehicles. Its factory uses additional structural adhesive, thousands of spot welds, precise alignment, and selective hand assembly. Powertrains and suspension systems are extensively scrutinized to withstand demanding performance driving.
Modern GR vehicles-including the GR86, GR Supra, and rally-inspired GR Corolla-embody this approach. The GR Corolla's GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, for example, dynamically distributes torque for improved performance. The program also extends into dedicated racing projects such as the GR GT3.
Ultimately, Toyota's TRD-to-GR performance heritage is defined by a continuous cycle: race, learn, engineer, and apply motorsport knowledge to increasingly capable road cars.
